Daniel was my best friend all throughout childhood and, in retrospect, my hero. He introduced me to rock music in Grade 5 when he gave me Iron Maiden's Seventh Son of a Seventh Son for my birthday. He was notorious for never giving anybody birthday gifts but I not only got a lifelong love of heavy metal and music in general (which is a pretty deep love, considering that Daniel, Imran and I--three of our core childhood group of five-- are all in bands now), I also got an Asterix in Corsica in Grade 6. We formed our first band together: The Attempted Band. Imran on guitars, Daniel on bass, me on drums. We bought and learned how to play our instruments together. My band's biggest hit is a song Imran originally played with Daniel's current band, which incidentally, I named. So I guess talking about how our lives intertwine (hell, we lived in the same building for years and across the street from each other all our lives, went to the same school for fourteen years) would be pointless. After our O' level exams, Daniel and I had a falling out which was entirely my fault. We didn't talk for a year or two and it used to be the worst feeling in the world: Daniel, Imran and I hanging out, my dying to mention the new Primus album and so loudly saying "Imran, you should really listen to Southbound Pachyderm" or whatever the song was. Daniel would reply "Imran, the drums at the end of that song are fucking awesome." Imran hated Primus. But that was five or six years ago. I think it took a long time for us to get that old closeness back. Only for the last two or three years have I felt that this friendship, the most wonderful thing ever (and I only had this really with Imran and Daniel), is back with Daniel Afzalur Rahman. Because we're all busy with lives (hah!) and jobs (HAH!) and girls (HAHAHAHA), we rarely get to see each other. Maybe once a week if we're lucky. But when we do, it's always back to the old dynamic, the one that I missed for so long because I was an idiot and then abroad for college. Oh and thanks dost for the testimonial you left me. I had no idea that I hadn't left you one and anyway, torta pore I got thinking and wrote a better testimonial than the one I would have written, which would have made fun of you for liking girls four years younger than you. (HAHAHA WHAT KIND OF BHOGCHUD WOULD DO THAT?)
